Reviews of “Vol. 2″

From the “East Bay Express”:

By: Rachel Swan

You don’t hear many multi-horn jazz bands these days. They’re challenging, unprofitable, and a bit of an anachronism. Yet some musicians remain enamored of the old big-band style. Local guitarist Mike Irwin Johnson is one such character. Classically trained, he’s been a workhorse in the jazz scene for roughly a decade. Two years ago Johnson got inspired to write arrangements for a band with four horns and a four-man rhythm section, which he called 8 Legged Monster. (He’s now expanded it to include six horns, and traded his piano player for vocalist Karina Denike.) It’s a cast of heavyweights — among them trumpeter Mike Olmos, trombonist Danny Grewen, reeds player Rob Barics, drummer Jaz Sawyer, and the ravishing Denike, who’s best known for singing in San Francisco ska band Dance Hall Crashers. Each band member has star power in his own right, and each contributes a unique personal history to 8 legged Monster. The result is exciting.

From “ejazznews”:

By: Edward Blanco

Billed as a unique “small-big band,” San Francisco Bay Area’s 8 Legged Monster is a nine-piece ensemble dedicated to playing from bebop, swing to free jazz and has, through the past few years, become a favorite amongst the SF jazz community of musicians. Vol.2 is much more than an improvement over their self titled CD of two years ago, it is an evolution to a higher form of swing, a restatement of what the band is and an affirmation that this is one little big band that is now, prepared to hang with the best of them. With this sophomore effort, guitarist Mike Irwin Johnson, leader of the band, draws from the Duke Ellington influence in his approach to composing the eight originals on this project, adds his own creative arrangements and succeeds in crafting an appreciable big band album with stylish big band sounds—all coming from a light ensemble with a lot of heart.
